SAN8102 - Vyākaraṇa IV explores the profound linguistic and semantic structures of compound words in Sanskrit. Students will classify and analyze the formation and meaning of compounds, while delving into the concepts of śabda (dhvani and sphoṭa) and artha (meaning). Through detailed examination and interpretation, learners will hypothesize the meanings of compound words within classical texts, fostering a deeper understanding of their usage and significance. The course emphasizes applying principles from Pāṇini’s Aṣṭādhyāyī to organize and interpret Sanskrit texts systematically. By integrating theoretical insights with practical exercises, students will enhance their ability to engage with Sanskrit literature and its grammatical intricacies at an advanced level.

Dr Tilak Rao

Tilaka M Rao is a faculty member at School of Vedic Sciences at MIT ADT University, Pune, specializing in Vyākaraṇa and Nyāya. He underwent 12 years of rigorous training in Vedic literature covering 10 major Upaniṣads in Prabodhinī Gurukula and Veda Vijñāna Gurukula in Karnataka along with training to chant the entire Kṛṣṇa-yajurveda (Taittirīya-śākhā). In addition, he had the opportunity to study many important works from classical Sanskrit including Kāvya, Paṇini’s Aṣṭādhyāyī, and philosophical systems including Vedānta, Nyāya, Sāṁkhya and Yoga.

❖Module 1: Compound Words in Sanskrit

  • Introduction to compound words (samāsāḥ): Definition and significance.
  • Classification of compound words: Avyayībhāva, Tatpuruṣa, Bahuvrīhi, Dvigu, and Karmadhāraya.
  • Rules and methods for forming compound words as per Aṣṭādhyāyī.

  • Practical exercises on hypothesizing and interpreting meanings from classical Sanskrit works.

  • Overview of Aṣṭādhyāyī principles relevant to organizing Sanskrit texts.
  • Application of grammatical rules to interpret and structure texts systematically.
  • Case studies of classical Sanskrit texts organized and analyzed through Aṣṭādhyāyī.
  • Practice sessions on organizing and annotating texts based on grammatical insights.

Class Structure

Each MAS course comprises 45 hours of teaching and with 2 quizzes and 2 assignments. The number of assignments and quizzes change subject to faculty discretion. Final exams for all courses conducted at the end of the semester.
